Pity the fool

My parents are coming to visit, so I touched up the paint in a few places around the house where it was chipped. About an hour later we noticed Abe licking the wall … in one of the spots I had just painted. I rushed over to stop him. Greg picked him up, and I pried open his mouth. I didn’t see any paint on his tongue. Nonetheless, we’re keeping close watch over him.
This may be our fault. We have trained Abe to clean up our messes. Whenever we drop food on the floor, we call Abe to pick it up. We let him lick our plates after we eat dinner. We have programmed him to pick up where we leave off. So when Abe saw the fresh paint, he thought: Gee, Mom made a mess here. I should take care of this for her. That is loyalty.
